Attendant Services

Attendant Services provide homemaking and personal support service to people 16 years of age and older, with permanent physical disabilities who require assistance with the activities of daily living and to carry out tasks that they cannot physically do for themselves.

The majority of adults with physical disabilities direct their own care.  The attendant follows the direction of the person and assists the person in carrying out the activities of daily living.  The amount and type of service will depend upon the person's needs.

GSPD provides attendant services funded by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care to individuals who meet the eligibility criteria determined by the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.

In 1994, the Ministry of Health passed the Long Term Care Act to regulate the quality of services people receive in the community. These services include: personal support (supportive housing, attendant outreach), professional services (nursing, social work, therapies), community supports such as Meals On Wheels, and homemaking services (cleaning, meal preparation). This Act includes the Bill of Rights, which is a set of rules concerning the provision of service. GSPD adheres to and promotes the Bill of Rights in all of the programs we provide.

GSPD offers three attendant service programs. Two attendant programs are carried out in designated apartment buildings - Supportive Housing Sites - Neeve Street and Willow Place and the third program provides Attendant Outreach support for individuals in the community. The Supportive Housing Sites provide 24-hour personal support services on a pre-scheduled basis with a 24-hour on-call service. The Attendant Outreach program provides service on a pre-scheduled basis only, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 12 a.m.
